MACOMB, IL — A 2008 ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ Illinois University graduate is being remembered through a new scholarship benefitting students in Speech Pathology and Audiology, Early Childhood Education and Medical Sciences.

Leontina Sherri Richardson, affectionately known as Tina, graduated from WIU with a degree in Marketing and a minor in Finance in 2008. She then completed her Master of Business Administration in 2011 at Roosevelt University. Richardson died Feb. 14, 2019, due to complications from cardiomyopathy.

Richardson lived a life of challenges and triumphs. Diagnosed with a stutter at the age of five, she received years of speech therapy. With the support of her family and professionals at Skinner Magnet School and Rush Hospital, she overcame her speech impediment to develop into a confident communicator.

During her time at Neuqua Valley High School, Richardson faced the painful challenges of alopecia during a time when self-image was especially fragile. She persevered, continuing to push forward with the same tenacity that had carried her through her childhood.

At WIU, Richardson thrived academically and personally. Her focus on business and marketing, combined with her involvement in organizations like Delta Sigma Pi, allowed her to take on roles and internships aligned with her career path.

In 2011, Richardson launched "Stepping into Etiquette," a business designed to equip youth and adults alike with essential life and social skills. What began with a single workshop at her church, Jordan Temple Baptist, soon grew into a movement. She earned a Corporate Etiquette and International Protocol Consultant certification from the Protocol School of Washington in 2016, which laid the foundation for her national influence.

Richardson became a sought-after consultant, coach and presenter, partnering with such organizations as the Girl Schools, local libraries, summer programs, high schools and corporations. In 2016, she published her first book, "Stop Embarrassing Yourself: The Guide to Dining Etiquette." Richardson made multiple appearances on WLS-TV's "Windy City Live" and was published in Modern Bride magazine and by Chicago Star Media. Throughout her career, thousands of participants learned the art of etiquette from her seminars and workshops.

Through all of her success, Richardson battled some private challenges, including lupus and heart disease. The limitations in her health did not limit her dreams. Richardson's strength, style and spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Now, the Leontina Sherri Richardson Memorial Scholarship will cement Richardson's legacy at WIU and provide support for generations of students into the future. Established by a group of loved ones and devoted friends and supported by her parents, Stephen and Cynthia Richardson, the fund will provide support for a $1,000 scholarship annually for a WIU student studying Speech Pathology and Audiology, Early Childhood Education or Medical Sciences.

"The Leontina Sherri Richardson Memorial Scholarship is more than financial assistance. It is a symbol of Tina's courage, excellence and unwavering belief in the power of personal development," Stephen said. "Through this endowment, her legacy will continue to uplift future generations, reminding them that challenges can be overcome, dreams can be pursued and life is meant to be lived boldly, with purpose, with passion and with joy."

The Richardsons and their friends worked with Interim Executive Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations Amy Crosby to endow the fund and establish the scholarship criteria.

"We are grateful to the Richardson family and their friends for honoring Tina's legacy at WIU," Crosby said. "This scholarship is a testament to the impact Tina made in her lifetime and the continued influence she will have on future Leathernecks pursuing careers in public service."

Additional contributions to the Leontina Sherri Richardson Endowment Fund can be made online at or mailed to the WIU Foundation, 1 University Circle, Macomb, IL 61455.
