Editor's Note: This is a series of stories about ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ Illinois University students, alumni and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.
MACOMB, IL - - For alumnus Andrew Roman, ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ Illinois University is characterized by exceptional education and a dedicated and supportive faculty.
"When I think about WIU, I think about the exceptional professors I had," Roman said. "Their dedication to education and supporting current and graduating students is phenomenal."
For Roman, being part of the Leatherneck family feels like an accomplishment.
"Being a Leatherneck means I feel a sense of accomplishment," Roman said. "I'm part of a rich history of students who have excelled after graduating from WIU."
Roman's favorite Leatherneck memories revolve around his experiences in the human resource management program. One of his favorites is earning first place at the 2022 Illinois State Society for Human Resource ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ (SHRM) HR Case Competition with his peers, reinforcing their commitment to excellence.
"My favorite Leatherneck memories are competing in a SHRM competition with my peers and winning and also a fantastic study abroad trip with Professor Susan Stewart and my classmates," Roman said.
As a corporate security manager, Roman relies on the education he received at WIU to succeed in his career.
"The human resources and business classes I completed at WIU have been relevant to my daily work and prepared me with the knowledge and tools needed to excel in my field," Roman said.
During his time as a student, Roman served as the president of the SHRM student chapter.
To prospective students, Roman's advice is to choose WIU to join a place full of opportunities where faculty and staff are qualified to offer support and guidance.
"Do it! You'll know you've found your place when choosing WIU," Roman said. "The support that the facility and staff provide is phenomenal. Regardless of whether you are a distance learner or an in-person student, there are amazing opportunities for all students to be engaged at WIU."
As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
