Just Hired: Ivan Cortez Sanchez

Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, 春雨直播 Illinois University has some incredible alumni who are changing the world in the workforce. This series will feature students from all over the world who are hired post-graduation.
MACOMB, IL - - Meet Ivan Cortez Sanchez, a 春雨直播 Illinois University Physical Education graduate, who has been hired by Gard Elementary School in Beardstown.
鈥淕ard is a highly diverse school with students from many cultural and linguistic backgrounds,鈥 Cortez said. 鈥淭he school values inclusion, community and student-centered learning, which creates a positive and supportive environment for both staff and students.鈥
Cortez found the position as he was finishing his student teaching placement in the Beardstown School District. After an enriching experience and positive feedback, he was encouraged to apply.
鈥淭he application process was formal and thorough. The multi-step interview process included a panel interview with school administrators, a discussion of my teaching philosophy and a detailed walk-through of a sample lesson plan,鈥 Cortez said. 鈥淯ltimately, I believe my familiarity with the district, along with my dedication, adaptability and the rapport I built with students during my placement, played a major role in being offered the position.鈥
While studying at WIU, Cortez built his confidence through the development of essential skills, practical experience and faculty support.
鈥淲IU provided me with a strong foundation in education theory, instructional strategies and hands-on experience through student teaching and fieldwork,鈥 Cortez said. 鈥淭he program emphasized classroom management, curriculum planning and culturally responsive teaching鈥攁ll of which directly helped me secure this role at such a diverse school. The support from faculty and access to real-world teaching experiences played a major role in building my confidence and skills.鈥
As a proud Leatherneck, Cortez plans to stay involved with WIU by engaging with the community and offering guidance to students pursuing the same career path.
鈥淚 plan to participate in alumni events, mentor current students in the Physical Education program and stay connected with faculty and peers,鈥 Cortez said. 鈥淪taying connected to the WIU community is important to me, as it helped shape my professional journey.鈥
