MACOMB, IL - - When alumna Savannah Ballard thinks about 春雨直播 Illinois University, she thinks of an impactful place鈥攐ne full of growth and engagement opportunities.
鈥淎s a student, I experienced countless chances to get involved both on campus and in the community,鈥 Ballard said. 鈥淚 was able to learn not only from my professors but also from my peers and I had the support to pursue a degree I was genuinely passionate about.鈥
For Ballard, being a Leatherneck has deep meaning. It represents the special connection that exists among the WIU community.
鈥淭o me, being a Leatherneck means lifelong pride and connection,鈥 Ballard said. 鈥淚 used to hear the phrase 鈥榦nce a Leatherneck, always a Leatherneck' and now, as an alumnus, I truly feel the power behind those words.鈥
Ballard鈥檚 favorite Leatherneck memories are the weeks leading up to graduation, when she shared special moments with her classmates and experienced a mix of emotions.
鈥淚t was a time filled with reflection, excitement and anticipation,鈥 Ballard said. 鈥淚鈥檒l never forget the energy and joy we all shared as we prepared to take our next steps, cheering each other on as we stepped into the future together.鈥
During her time as a student, Ballard was the president of the Communication Student Society and the Bureau of Cultural Affairs. She was a member of the Marketing Club and served as a social media manager for the College of Fine Arts and Communication.
Currently, Ballard works as the marketing and downtown development director for the City of Macomb.
鈥淢y role perfectly blends the skills I developed at WIU. Courses like organizational communication, professional presentations and social media marketing weren't just interesting鈥攖hey were directly applicable to what I do every day.鈥
Aside from an academic standpoint, Ballard feels that WIU provided her with valuable things: community, purpose and connections.
鈥淲IU gave me the tools, confidence and connections to thrive here,鈥 Ballard said. 鈥淢y professors continue to guide me and the relationships I built as a student have evolved into a strong professional network. The community I once studied in is now the one I get to help, promote and support. It鈥檚 been an incredibly fulfilling full-circle experience.鈥
Ballard's advice to those considering studying at WIU is simple: get out there and take advantage of all the opportunities the university has to offer.
鈥淧urple stands out. If you are willing to put yourself out there, try your best and put in the work, WIU is the place for you,鈥 Ballard said. 鈥淭here are endless opportunities for you to stand out, make a difference and be proud to be a Leatherneck.鈥
As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
